I will be restoring an air cleaner base for my 66 L-72 car. What is the correct paint to use? I was planning to spray it, but I think they were dipped originally. Is there anyone out there who can dip this for me and help me get the correct finish? Thanks.

Re: Air filter base finish
I guess most of the older guys are already asleep by 9:30pm on Sundays. The 66JG says all air cleaner bases (SB and BB) are painted gloss black (p. 98)
I checked my original '67 (L79) air cleaner base, and the sections that have been protected appear to be on the glossy side of semi-gloss black.- Top

Re: Air filter base finish
I can't tell you about 1966, but by 1968 through 1972 they were spraying the air cleaner base. We often see originals with a mark for the hook they were hung from during the spraying process. Now you have to figure out if they did it the same way in 1966.
At least I will give you a boost to the top.Terry- Top

Re: Air filter base finish
Larry
I just recently received an original, unrestored 67 435 Air cleaner assembly in a box of parts I got from a member. I took some pics of the unit as I wanted to document the original 435 lid decal, the lip, the silk screening etc...but regarding your inquiry I documented (for myself) that the finish (which I really believe is the original) is gloss black...no doubt about it...and I doubt if anyone ever shot the base...as the entire unit is untouched...Hope this helps, and that others may chim in...Good luck... Re: Air filter base finish
I am with Terry. They were sprayed and not dipped. You can see on originals where there is a mark with no paint as the hook was against it when it was hung. Also, if you look under the base and on the top, often there is bare metal due to spartan coverage. The paint used was gloss black lacquer.

Re: Air filter base finish
Terry and Ron,
Would the painting process have been different for midyears, or if not, would spraying still be enough to result in drips and runs? I just checked my '67 L79 air cleaner base again, and found what looks like three runs. If the base had been hung from the squared-off cut-out of the circular center opening, with the cut-out being oriented at the 12 o'clock position, the first paint run is near the outer edge at roughly the 4 o'clock position.
The other two paint runs go down each side and converge at the 6 o'clock position where the rise (or depression, depending on which side you're looking at) of the drop-base begins, which would make sense if the base had been hung by the center cut-out section oriented at 12 o'clock. The paint has worn away at some of the contact points and there is surface rust around the outermost edge, but everywhere the paint has been protected, it looks like thorough coverage.- Top

I am not sure that every round air cleaner base was hung with the locating notch at the hook. There would be no reason I can think of to do that, and I expect the person hanging them on the hooks would not be motivated to pay attention to such details. So long as the part was on the hook, why worry about anything else? Now for the triangular ones, I can see some reason (balance) to hang them by that point.Terry- Top

Re: Air filter base finish
Scott,
Not a mid year judge, but I have owned several of them, and all my observations point towards the base being hung and sprayed. If you would like an exact match to the black sheen. call me at the number below and I will be happy to assist. Thanks.

Re: Air filter base finish
Just waking up, you know I know a guy that hung these on the paint racks up in Flint where they were made, flocote, not a dip, nor spray, have NOS Z28 LT1 set as a master and these were not gloss black, to be technical about it. To get it right, you have to do it like it was done back then, and we have, Larry you should have known to call me...- Top

Re: Air filter base finish
Ronald, thats right, you had some of these refinished. I'd like to know more about the process they used. I have not done mine yet, but I would like to soon. Let me know where you had it done and what kind of cost was involved.
