How do You Clean an Aluminum Intake Manifold

I'm detailing my engine, which I just go back from it being rebuilt and was wondering what is the best method to restore the aluminum intake manifold. I've been able to get the grease and dirt off of it, but there is still some in the porous areas and there are a few scratches on it. Any help would be apprecited.

    Bob,
lots of prior threads on this.
    here is one

I used Aluminum Jelly, like Naval Jelly but for aluminum. Several treatments, and it was clean as a whistle with the original "skin" and sheen intact.
Of course it will not cure scratches and pitting.
    good luck

Don, Went to a few places this morning and no one has this. In fact the naval jelly they have is not actually called naval jelly anymore. It called rust remover, but it is for steel only not for aluminum.

I tried buying some last year too, and could not find any, even on the Internet. Used to have it years ago.

It appears the company has been sold to Loctite. I did not call Loctite, but I would like to have some. -Dan-

          Bob, Dan
the stuff is out there, at Ace or True Value Hardware. My bottle says Duro by Loctite Corp.

Look here to see some of the places you will find it.

Hey, that looks good Don. I'm wondering if it has appeared again after been gone for awhile. The E-Bay link shows the Loctite version as a new item, and another version (for half the cost) as made by "Duro". Never heard of that. -Dan-

Saw demonstration on the Speed channel recently on using Sharkhide aluminum cleaner and protectorant. Haven't tried it yet but it looked like it did a great job. Website "www.sharkhide.com" shows their products mostly available at boat dealers but it may be available elsewhere. Spray it on, let it set a few minutes, and wash it off, and you're done.

                Robert,
I clean dirt, grase and fuel stains off my al2 intake with finger nail polish remover. I put my index finger in a rag coated with the nail polish remover and rub on it until it comes off; redo a second time if needed; makes it clean and no damage to the al2 intake. Good luck; it works.

I don't know what year model engine you have. The aluminum intake manifolds on 60s Sting Rays were painted silver. Are you prepping your manifold prior to painting it? Won't the paint cover up all of the scratches, etc.?

                    George -

Hope you use rubber gloves when you do that - nail polish remover is acetone.

                      Clark -

Not the entire intake manifold - only the side edges, from the operation that sprayed silver on the exposed surface of the cylinder head.

John, of course, you are correct. Where the heck did I get the idea that the L76 engine's aluminum intake manifold was painted silver at the factory? It is stuck in my head even though the '65 JG states exactly what you stated.

I'm certain that DR George has handled a lot worse than that during his pre-med and medical career.

Dr George is not an MD.

All that stuff is absorbed through the skin. Not good.

For Aluminum Jelly, I looked in Lowes, HD, and Advance Auto last night. No joy, but the guy in Advance said that he thinks a locally owned hardware store, known as Debbie Supply, has it. I will check this week. Debbie Supply stays in business by carrying everything under the sun. Stuff nobody else carries. -Dan-
