    Speaker Reconing

Who does speaker reconing? I have used Jackson Speaker Service in the past but get no answer on the phone and their email was kicked back. Thanks in advance

Google speaker reconing for an address... I've used http://www.nostalgiasounds.com/ on a couple of occasions and they did a great job and the cost was reasonable.....

I've used Sound Remedy in NJ (856-869-0238) soundremedy.com. They did a great job and were very reasonable. I think around 35.00 per speaker.

I am glad everyone has had a better experience than I had with Jackson. Took forever and my 9.95 E-Bay speaker sounded a lot better. Mike

Mike, did you check and, if needed, re-adjust the bias control in the radio to match the speaker after you got it back from Ron?

If the voltage was not correct, and most of the un-refurbed radios are off due to corrosion in the control, your sound would be very distorted and you could be drawing excess current through the DS-501 on the back. Then ohmic heating occurs.

Another thing that happens is that shippers smack the speakers, which are delicate, around when returning them. Occasionally the magnet in the speaker voice coil is knocked off center and rubs on the bobbin (the 'former'). Then it sounds really bad.

Things happen but he'll always check it for you. 15 years, loads of speakers, and he's still 100% here.

                  FWIW...

                    Re: Speaker Reconing

I liked the guy. Sent him the money with the speaker and all of my contact info. This was one of the very flat speakers that are suppose to or not be for the a/c cars. Never heard anything. Called after 60 days and he said he wondered whose speaker it was. My info was all over it. He ask if I had been working on my myself and I told him no I just bought off E-Bay and shipped it directly to him. He argued something about the coil but said he would send it back and maybe it would work. I sent to him to fix. Plain and simple fix it. What ever it cost. Got it back and had to unsolder some wires and remove a coil?? that he was complaining about. Hooked it up and I wouldn`t give 10.00 for it but car has sidepipes and I probably can`t hear it anyway. 250.00 shot (including what I paid on E-bay for it) I was being held up to put the dash in so its in the car and with the a/c it ain`t coming out. I do appreciate the tips though. My Chinese speaker played great on the same radio. I`m not mad at the guy just disappointed but this happens to me all the time. The more I pay the worst it gets. Thanks, Mike

                      Re: Speaker Reconing

You did have a rainy day with that experience Mike. Ron knows about the loading and perhaps was indicating it was not the original but one of the substitutes (which is almost a dead short) that the vendors other than Corvette America and ZIP sell to us today on their aftermarket speakers.

I have one of the thin profile speakers here that I repaired and use on the test bench. They do come from the AC cars. It sounds great, much better than I ever expected. Yours should sound that way also. I've seen a couple dozen of them here that guys have sent with their radios. Those that worked, worked well.

If you want to take this off line, feel free to send me a picture of the speaker (mainly to see the loading coil) and if you have an ohm meter, I can give you some things to check. Nothing hard... I can give you a simple modification for the existing speaker to make the radio at least think it's working into the correct load, but you'd have to drop the duct and add a part and splice a wire. Hard on the neck...

Mike, it's a Corvette, everything is supposed to be hard and expensive. It's how we convince our wives that we're real men on a mission from GM (and I don't mean the Grand Master).

                        Re: Speaker Reconing

Thanks Jerry , I appreciate the help. It was a Delco original speaker but I think the coil was not. I had never seen one before so I had no idea what I was looking at. I wish he had just called me and said it would cost more and fix it. He did do a beautiful job of the reconing. Enough on that. This whole car has been this way for the last eleven tears no I meant years. I think I had it right the first time. That might be whats wrong with me. I am now completely crazy. I will see if I can get a peak at that speaker and possibly get a picture of it. Right after putting the dash back together the rebuilt wiper motor quit. I don`t never ever want to do that job again. I am 290 lbs and 6ft tall and for me to work behind the a/C heat box and change that thing was punishing. Two me almost two weeks to get the last two screws in. I don`t know how many screws were lost behind that box but someone in the future will be in for a surprise. Not to count the little wrenches that went somewhere. Thanks for the responce. I thick I was just getting rid of frustration when I saw the post. Mike

Jackson Speaker is alive and well, I just got my speaker back and as usual they did a great job and priced very fair.

Just to reinforce the trust and experience I have had with Ron at Jackson Speaker, since this thread started I have had two speakers done by them and both were excellent!
That's always the experience I've had with Jackson Speaker.
