I'm having trouble reinstalling the molding that is at the top of each fender that aligns with the wiper door molding. I know that it attaches with 2 clips and a screw, but for some reason I can't get the clips to slide on to the top of the fender. I have verified that I have the correct clips, infact I'm using the ones that came off the car prior to it being painted! It appears that there is a rubber caulk between the fender and firewall in this area. Do I need to remove this caulk or is there a better way to attach the clips?

Re: 72 Top of Fender Molding Attachment Issues
Hi Bob,
I'd think you should be able to slide them on even with that black sealer/caulk there.
They really are positioned quite far to the rear of the fender's lip. Are you trying in the right place?
Also, the 'prong' on the bottom side needs to be in the right place to catch in the holes in the fiberglass.
I found that if the 'prongs' aren't holding the clip, the clip wants to slide off the fender's lip as you slide trim piece in place.
Good Luck!

Re: 72 Top of Fender Molding Attachment Issues
Alan,
Thanks for your help. Just to clarify, is the prong on the top side of the fender or on the underside? You also mention that there are holes in the top edge of the fender. Is it a hole or a notch? I don't actually have either!Bob Puls, 30633- Top

Re: 72 Top of Fender Molding Attachment Issues
Hi Bob,
The 'prong' is on the underside of the clip when installed. It helps hold the clip in place.
There were very distinct holes on my 71 fenders. The 2nd picture shows the forward one clearly, the one behind it has some 'gunk' in it so doesn't show as clearly.
The holes and their locations (dimensions) are shown in the AIM, UPC 1 asm, Sheet F 8, View C.
