I just purchased a 1959 original F.I. corvette that is truly a barn find. It had been sitting since 1975 . The F.I. is gone along with the original engine but everthing else is correct. How do I remove the gas tank? Just thick black tar comes out. My second question is the interior is black and I am going to change it to red. Is the instrument cluster painted metal and what is the paint? Thanks Pat McPherson

Re: 1959 gas tank removal
If you haven't already, suggest you buy some books. At a minimum you need the ST12 which is the 53 to 62 corvette servicing guide and the AIM for your year model. I'm in the process of finishing restoration of a 1960 and there are other books that are invaluable when doing a restoration. The 58-60 Corvette Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide and the Complete Corvette Restoration & Technical Guide 53 through 62. These are all available via this website store.
To remove the fuel tank (following is generally what needs to be done):
disconnect the battery
Drain the tank
Remove the fuel tank cover behind the seats
disconnect electrical to the sending unit
disconnect the rubber vapor tube
disconnect the fuel line to the sending unit
disconnect the hold down straps
remove the tank (its a tight fit so not exactly easy to get out).
The gauge cluster is painted metal. Actually cast 'pot metal'. It would have been painted the same color as the interior. Originally the paint was lacquer. If you do some searching and research on this forum you'll find a ton of discussion regarding paint.Don Harris
