Installing new carpet, making flaps for front seat mounts.

I have just finished installing new carpet in my '71 vette. My question is how do I make the flaps for the front seat mount? How long are they? This seems like a stupid question, but I want to be correct.

    Thanks

    Frank'
Look up Patrick Hulst on the member list and click on his signature there you'll find some really great pic.s of his 72 bowtie car. He has some nice picks of the carpet install from the factory.

      Frank,
I would assume the flaps are the same as a mid year. The cut should hinge from the center of the seats and the opening should allow the seat mounting feet to sit against the floor without any carpet obstruction. Approx. 1 3/4 x 2 1/4 cut.

I generally slide the lead edge of the carpet 1/4 to 1/2 inch over the seat mount foot so it looks nice and the cut is a bit shorter. I'm sure there was a lot of variation on this during GM's assembly.......

I am sure if the engineers would have wanted an exact cut they would have provided dimensions in the AIM.

          Hi Frank,
On my 71, mid-January built car, a small rectangle of carpet was removed right to the rear of the flap. Because of this, the entire length of the track's front feet sit on the fiberglass underbody, not on the carpet
Here's a picture of the original carpet. You can just see the horizontal slits that form the flap, and the removed area behind it.
          Regards,
          Alan
