Re: FI Fuel pump cable lubrication
Jerry, Steve at Speedometer Service in Tulsa makes speedo cables to order and has made us some FI cables.

(918) 584-7698
Running the cable with out a housing never worked for me, came off when letting off of the gas at high RPM.

Re: FI Fuel pump cable lubrication
Thank you. i've been to that shop! I agree on the housing, my reliability improved with the housing. I suspect that after a few failures the inside of the housing gets dinged up and helps reduce fatigue life.- Top

Re: FI Fuel pump cable lubrication
Clem Thank you. I see they have a bronze alloy cable with relatively low strength. I suspect that is what I have is an alloy that gives the cable the coloration that it has while still being magnetic. i'll talk with them today. Jerry- Top

Re: FI Fuel pump cable lubrication
I did a test once - took small dabs or each and rubbed them between my fingers. The wheel bearing grease quickly began to drag. The ...954 remained very slippery.
Maybe a solid graphite like Lok-Eze would work, too.

Re: FI Fuel pump cable lubrication
Wheel bearing grease is too gummy and may cause drag, which can increase cable stress. I think GM 1960954 dist. and starter motor bushing grease would work well, if you can find any. It's been out of production for some time.

Re: FI Fuel pump cable lubrication
Clem, That's where I first got the idea of running without a drive cable housing. But Gulf oil did do the following. They cut the end of the drive cable housing off where it goes into the distributor. Used the stubby piece and the round nut to hold the cable from flying out.
In fact in the old days that was the norm. JD- Top

Re: FI Fuel pump cable lubrication
I am still using the same cable that came with the injecter on my 63. I have over 80000 miles on it. I think that you could call it spirited driving quite often. I did replace the inner cable once as I saw that it was coming unraveled at the square end that is formed. I mostly changed it because it would ***** me when I was applying more grease. The original cable housing has always looked a little kinked but I have not ever broken a cable in all those miles. I just regreased it when I had the fuel meter off. I think that when I see it getting greasy through the cable spiral is when I take it off and clean it and regrease it. I have not had a set period of miles or anything that I go by. No problems so far. I guess that I am just lucky. I always have carried a spare but never had to use it.It's a good life!
