    Steering column I.P.??

    Hello all,
I am trying to get my steering column back into my car after removing it more than a year ago. On M220 of my 72 Assembly Manual it mentions something called I.P. can anyone tell me what it refers to?
    Thanks
    Scott

    Scott -

I don't have a '72 Assembly Manual, but "I.P." normally refers to "instrument panel"; what does the note say where "I.P." is mentioned?

It says "Then pull support (U) rearward to accomodate height diffrential of I.P. to bracket (T). And "Do not tighten column to I.P. until vehicle is on its wheels or suspension."

        Re: Steering column I.P.??

        Hi Scott,
I believe that since in the sequence described, the I.P. (left-side dash pad), is already in place, and the bracket (T) is already fixed in place, the moving of the sloped bracket (U), forward or rearward moves the steering column up or down relative to the left-side dash pad. This movement is used to maintain the gap called for (+.03/-.03), between the mast jacket and the I.P (dash pad).
If the position of the bracket (U) isn't adjusted, the steering column could be too close or too far from the dash pad when the bolts (H) are installed and tightened.
        Regards,
        Alan

          Scott,

Just as a general comment the page number you cite (M220) is a page number inserted by the printer of your copy of the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual). It is only useable by others who have purchased an AIM from the same supplier. Other suppliers may number their pages differently, or not at all. GM identified the pages by the information in the bottom center of the page: UPC 2, Sheet A1 or similar. This numbering system, as complex as it is, will allow all of us (regardless of where our AIM was sourced) to identify the page you refer to.

              Thanks for the info Terry!
Now I see the UPC and sheet #s.
Good to know in future posts as I am sure I will have many more.
Getting this column to line up has been a pain in the rear. When I started I didn't have any of the dash in. Now I have put in the center console, gauge cluster and "I.P." to help line of that column. Not sure exactly what the order of installation of interior pieces is for the Corvette, but I figured the steering column was a good start. I have stripped the entire interiorfrom the car and am getting ready to get it back together with new carpet, weatherstripping and panels. Is there any info on the exact order of installing the complete interior? Just want to do it right!
              Thanks again!

If memory serves me John Hinkley once posted a tip as to the order of assembly based on the pages in the AIM, but I should let John speak to that to be certain my memory has not fooled me. John does not usually prowl the C3 posts, but I will send him a message to get his attention.

                  Scott -

In general terms, the car was driven off the Final Line (using a removable temporary seat) with no interior in it, other than the instrument panel; after Roll Test, Water Test, and Mechanical & Paint Repair, it proceeded to the Final Trim Line, where all the interior soft trim, carpets, door and quarter trim panels, console side panels, and seat belts and seats were installed, followed by Final Inspection and Shipping.
