    Brake Drums Riveted to Hub

    Hi all,

I know some front brake drums were riveted to the hub. I'm just curious as to why this was since it makes you have to take the wheel bearing out every time you need to get to the shoes. Any idea?

    Thanks,

    Bob

It was only done for a few years and then abandoned. I expect the reason was to either ensure tight tolerances between the hub and drum and/or as a PRODUCTION convenience.

The rivets can be removed and the drum separated from the hub. I would expect that this has occurred by now for the VAST majority of cars that originally had riveted drums.
