    65 front spindle paint markings

This is the right front spindle from my 65 showing white paint with runs. The runs would indicate that the paint was applied prior to assemble. What does the white paint mean?

This is the left front spindle with orange paint in two different spots. What does this orange paint mean and why are the two spindles marked differently?

Also, my 65 Judging Guide mentions paint markings on the spindles. Is there a points deduction if they are not there?

    Thanks for your input.

Bill: I bought the 1965 Chassis Detailing Kit from Quanta. I have not done the detailing on my '65 yet but Quanta' detailing manual says the following:

" A white inspection mark appears on the spindle ends where they are attached to the ball joints" and "The steering knuckle arm to spindle bolts may have a yellow dab on the nuts"

    It doesn't mention orange.

      Thanks Mike,

I have the same Quanta kit and saw the same info. Since mine didn't match what Quanta said, I posted my questions.

      Thanks for responding.

I wouldn't believe what the kit from Quanta says. My 65 has all it's original markings and most DON'T agree with Quanta. My from spindles have green, orange and white markings. Another mistake is the "rings" on the driveshaft. Mine has no rings but it has a couple different colored slashes of paint. The book "Corvette Restoration -state of the art" documents a restoration of a 65 built less than 200 cars after mine that has the same driveshaft marks. Both cars share several marks in common. Not all cars got all of the markings. I believe many were random quality control marks. If you follow the Quanta instructions and put all the marks on your car, not only will it be incorrect but it will look like you ran over a box full of colored paints laying in the street.

Thanks for sharing your photos. I like to keep photos like these to show the color and location of paint markings. Quanta is just a generic guide and should not be believed as some universal standard in all cases. My spindles had orange, white and blue. Dave Burroughs 1981 book also records original paint daubs from a '65 396 car. Please post other original paint markings from other parts of your car if you are able to find them.

Jim, I was wondering, if you might be able to send me pictures of your 65 frame markings. I am in the process of restoring my 65 396 car.

                Bill,
Nice pair of spindles!! The Quanta paints appear to be very thick and glossy. All the factory markings I have seen, look to be fairly thin and easily flowing (hence all the drips.) One important point, when you reproduce these marks; they are applied before the machining process. [The ball joint boss, as well as other machined surfaces (Some spindles have grinder marks, where excessive cast flash was removed.) should be free of any paint/markings.]
I also would be interested to know, if you have any other markings on your car. Anything on the calipers? Any markings on the bottom of the frame near the gas tank?
                Thanks for sharing.
                Marco

Does anyone have the copy of the Quanta Chassis markings that can be copied? So I might be able to see the their idea of "correct" markings, also.

"Correct" varies as much as there were employees on that work station. More often, I have seen the orange mark on the lower leg and white on the upper leg. Some had no orange, some had blue.

Guys, your car should indicate the paint markings not some kit sold by Quanta. No kit is necessary, just buy some Testers model paints, or art supply small bottles of paint. Duplicate what is on the car. Duplicate the stencils with letter guides and cut out with X acto knife. Much more cost effective and most important correct for your car.

                          Gene,

I have placed so much faith in Quanta for being perfect selling their kits all these years so people can clown up their Corvettes! I guess we have not stopped to think that at least half of the driveshaft and short shafts along with everything else was blacked out!!!!
                          You have ruined by day!!!!

My Vin is: 18585. Its a low optioned roadster. I bought it from, I believe, the second owner from Dearborn, MI.

Joe, I agree also. However, when all of that is not available, (all traces of any paint markings are gone) what other options are there ?
