Re: Wheelwell Surface Finish - 1970

Thanks Bill...Previous replies to this thread indicate an unique undercoating "texture or "pattern" and suggested some difficulty replicating the factory finish. I understand the application was random at best.

As a general question to Forum members, is there an example of this finish and is there a product (hopefully in a spray can)and application process that will replicate it? Thanks...Clark

Tried 4 different spray can undercoating. None even came close. The EPA regulations have pretty much banned what we used to know as undercoating in a spray can. You can get it in the UK in an aerosol still but I tried and could not get it in the country.

3M has a product that is very very close but it requires a special applicator and an air compressor. Think it is called schutz.

      Kind Regards,

      Bill

Thanks Bill...Your research has certainly saved me a lot of effort. I'm going to look for a C-3 that has unrestored wheel wells to get an idea of what the undercoating texture looks like understanding it was applied randomly and then check with a couple of body shops to see if they have the special applicator and can apply the 3M product you identified before applying the semi-gloss black covering. A wheel well photo from a member would be very helpful.

The new 5th addition Judging Guide doesn't provide an undercoating description/picture so it's unclear what criteria is used to evaluate this area or the potential point value...Clark

Thanks Patrick...From your message I was able to pull up and view the wheel well pictures you posted. Very helpful identifying the random pattern and texture of the undercoating much as I remember it before the paint shop removed the "evidence". Will first check auto stores to see what's available off the shelf but based on earlier posts will most likely have to consult with a local body shop to see if they can replicate the texture. The I can paint the wells in a semi-gloss black finish. Best...Clark

              Clark,

The finish is more of a satin, not semi-gloss.
              Try SEM Trim Black.
