    Re-Plating Hardware

I do not have enough hardware myself to justify the cost of sending it out to be re-plated.

The finishes to be re plated are likely gray phosphate, clear zinc, and maybe Cad.

Hardware is for rear suspension, bumpers, and bumper mounting brackets.

Any interest in combining with another member or two to get our hardware done?

    Thanks, Bill

BTW: I am in Maryland and mine is a 70 vert.

    Hi Bill
What parts do you need gray phosphated? as for clear zinc a commercial plater is the best, some cad stuff if small you can do your self using the caswell stuff. I have the solution for gray phosphate so I was wondering what advice I can give or to help you out.

      Hi Grant,

I have the spare tire carrier hardware, rear suspension hardware, and bumper hardware fro fro and rear bumpers. A lot is gray phosphate, some is clear zinc, and I think the camber adjustment bolts are cad plated.

How much is the solution you have for phosphating and how difficult is it to use. Is it the stuff you heat up to 200 degrees in a crock pot?

I have been looking at the caswell set up and it would still cost quite a bit with a good power supply. That power supply seems to be the key to getting the desired results.

I have seen some excellent results from some of the guys here on the board.

Grant, don't you mean copy cad, which is zinc, not cadmium, right ?

          Hi Paul
          I think you are right.
Last time I had caliper shields done, they did it with cadium plating and then a gold irrate plating which give it a dull gold shine which was not correct. So I got them all stripped again. On caliper shields that originally had the Cadium plating were Cadium plated again and came out correct.

Zinc plating / clear plating or copy cad? it came out shiney zinc and with the gold irrate plating as originally on the cars items came out the way it was supposed to be shiney gold finish, ie brake shields master cylinder caps. S

Sometimes it gets so confusing over a period of time. Getting old I guess.

          Thanks, Grant

            Hi Bill,
The zinc and manganese phosphate supplies from Palmetto Enterprises, and the black oxide kit from Caswell, seem priced so that an individual could justify buying them to do their own parts.
The processes are quite straight forward compared to the zinc process. For the phosphate and oxide finishes the proper prep of the fasteners is really the biggest part of the job.
Have you considered doing your parts your self?
            Regards,
            Alan

Bill, there are some people on this forum who do thier own plating, and some who do excellent work (it might be Jerry Fuccillo, or maybe even Grant but I don't remember). There has been a lot of discussion on plating, home techniques, kits, etc. and all of this is in the archives. Here are two of many, many threads on it:

                  Thanks guys.

I am going to attempt the phosphating on my own.

Grant also suggested a way to zinc plate at home that does not cost quite as much.
