#4 '78 Pace Car on ebay

I went back a few days to see if anyone had seen this, and I didn't see any threads, so

The #00004 '78 Pace Car is up for sale on ebay. Just wondering if it is real. I had heard that this car had a salvage title a few years back when it was sold thru BJ....don't know if any of that is true.

Are you suggesting that the VIN is bogus?

You may be confusing the 4th built Pace Car for Indy track day versus the Pace Car that was assigned VIN tag 900004. The 4th built carried a prototype VIN, actually I believe it was a regular production vehicle with the RPO Z78 option built for the photo ops at the track. This is the one that had been subject to some controversy and its where abouts.

Ok...more stuff. Following the race it was loaned to the United States Auto Club to be used as a pace car for the remainder of their racing season. This car was recently sold at auction for $29,700 (a few years ago) and was last known to be in the possession of a Chevrolet dealer in Kansas. According to a GM Inter-Office letter it was assigned VIN 1Z87H8S400006. What makes this interesting is the fact that the "H" represents the 305 ci engine not available on the Corvette but available on other Chevrolet models in 1978. The VIN stamp conflicts with the the intended configuration which was an L82 motor according to the Chevrolet Motor Division inter-organization memo.

I understood the limit to be 5000 Chevy dealers and 5000 Pace cars, limit one per dealer. So how did this dealer get #0003 and 0004?

One dealer did not get 3 and 4. His ad states #3 and #4 were cars released to the public through dealers. ( At least that's what he meant to say ) #3 was the first pace car released to the public. It was in our collection at BUDS and was recently sold along with the last pace car, #6502. We sold them as a pair to a private collector. Both were L82 4 speeds and still new in the wrapper. Tom Russo inspected both cars at BUDS last summer and documented them for his records.

Quantity built was 6502. One for each dealer.

with 8000 miles on it i would think most 78 pace cars have less miles on them. out of all sports cars i cannot think of another year car that so many were put away and have next to no miles. i think people are starting to realize with the large number of low mile pace cars that these cars are nothing special and it is a waste just storing them.
