1971 454 automatic Starter motor install issues / Happy July 4th to all NCRS members

Just want to say to all fellow NCRS members to enjoy a safe and Happy July 4th 2012

For us up north a bit its Canada’s July 1
st weekend. So happy holidays NCRS members in Canada and fellow BCNCRS members

I have been under the car for a week now. Maybe 4 hours in total in trying to install the starter in the 71 454 auto.

    Some-ting!!!! is not working...it won't fit

Starter will not bolt to the engine

    1971 454 Automatic
Got the starter rebuilt and a correct one for my 71 454 1108429
Tried to install for the past 7 days. Nothing is working soI take off the lower transmission shield as I see with a flash light it was hitting the shield. Thinking that was the problem...it wasn't

Pic 1 you can see with the screw driver pointing to theinner starter nose. It is hitting the ring gear. Only 1 inside bolt is semi bolted.

Pic 2 you see the unbolted 2nd bolt as it willnot go in as the starter motor is not flush with the block.
Pic 3 You can see the starter motor and area where screwdriver is pointing to area where it meets up with the ring gear
Pic 4 You can see the installed fly wheel ring gear Boltpattern and flywheel pattern,

I don’t think I installed the fly wheel improperly as it seemed only togo on one way.

Did I inadvertently install the ring gear fly wheel backwords????001 (2).jpg002.jpg003.jpg004.jpg Or the engine rebuilder sold me a wrong fly wheel ring which he supposively knew it was for acorvette.

    I appreciate any help.

Also would anybody know where I can get a 71 Turbo 400 automatic tranmission oil tube with the original transmission dip stick indicator. I miss placed mine and can't find it.
    Thanks, Grant

Grant, I'd start with researching the starter to make sure that it's the right one. You need to find some pictures of the nose. I think there are some in the archives for a big block, but I don't remember. If you're sure that the starter is right, then I'd start checking the flywheel.

I have not removed or installed a starter on a 71 454 turbo 400 but I have on my 70 350/300 turbo 400. Not at home now to look at my 70 but I am think/believe that the nose on your starter is very different. I think mine has bolt holes straight across and not like what you show in your pictures.

        Hi Paul and Jim
I think you both hit the nail on the Nose issue. I got a call from our local "corvette" shop and BCNCRS member Gary Yorke and he said the nose is not right. I will take it to him and make some comparisons to see what wrong nose I have.
        Thanks Grant

I can't see the starter nose well enough to determine if it's correct. Is it aluminum (as it appears to be) and does it use TWO LONG starter bolts for attachment to the block?
