    64 Coupe

After some serious life issues, and a tour in Iraq, I am starting to finalize my rebuild on my 64 Coupe!
    Need some dumb questions answered.

    Installing the steering shaft.
How far does the black mast jacket stick out froom the firewall?
Is the adjustment of shaft and coupling (how far should it insert into coupling) just for drivers preference?

    Can we post pictures?

    Thanks!

    Re: 64 Coupe

Adjustment is drivers preference, limited by the length of the flat on the steering shaft interfering with the rag joint coupler, but a couple of inches is adjustable (from memory) We can post pictures but mine is a Tele column car so it looks a lot different than yours. Check your assembly manual, D-190 in mine section 9 sheet 4 has some insight.

Here's a shot of the flat on an NOS shaft (on the left, in picture); is about 2_1/2" long. Total adjustment depends on the other limitations that Bill mentions.

I don't have the assembly manual in front of me but the following is how I assembled mine. I think you will find in the assembly manual that the shaft is to extend half way into the coupler of the rag joint. Be certain you have the firewal seal, the seal retainer, the tube to shaft seal, the washer, the spring and the clamp in position on the shaft before you insert the shaft into the coupler at the steering box. You can look between the 2 halves of the rag joint and see the end of the shaft to get it positioned. The bolt on the rag joint coupler must pass across the flat on the shaft as mentioned in the reply above. When I assembled mine I connected the shaft to the rag joint first, inserted the bolt in the coupler of the rag joint and snugged it. At that point if you look at the steering wheel you will find that the bell on the housing is not against the hub of the steering wheel. From the engine compartment you have to push the tube towards the steering wheel until the bell is almost against the back of the hub of the wheel. You then tighten the clamp on the firewall side to hold the tube in that position. As I recall the manual mentions the spring tension but I have no idea how you would measure it.
