finish on back side of 58 wheels

What should the finish be on the back side of the 58 wheels? I have heard flat black but haven't seen any that way.

You might pull a tire off the rim and see if there is a clue inside as to the original color before the exterior paint color was applied.

Bill, They came to me stripped and primed flat black with a note from an NCRS member saying they were primed in flat black. I am not real up on C1s but I don't think they are suppose to be left flat black

Do you have a current '58-60 Judging guide? The one I have, (old and out of daye) says backside of wheels is Semi-gloss black, with possible spray-thhu of frontside color

Bill, I don't have a 58 guide but what you posted is what I would expect. Thanks for that info.

The semi-gloss black (I agree) probably started as a cheap glossy paint which the rim was dipped into.

All 58 standard five inch wheels were semigloss on the back and inca silver on the front with silver showing thru the slots on the back side. They will need the rubber tubing stone guards in the slots after paint.

Can I ask what you are using to answer your questions?

I am doing just the body and paint for the owner who I am sure has his guide and is doing the rest of the restoration. Otherwise my knowledge,my partners knowledge and the owners.

Search the archives here or over at Corvette Forum. John Hinckley once posted the process on how these wheels were painted at the factory.

Here's the Corvette wheel paint process; they were done at the adjacent passenger/truck plant (including tire mount & balance), racked, and transported across the back yard to the Corvette building by a fork truck.
