Mechanic or shop stamp on engine pad?

Was it ever a practice for a mechanic or repair shop to stamp a 4 digit ID number on the pad after having repaired a motor?

Some shops did this as a way to track their work in case of warranty issues.

Thanks Dick, I never saw it nor did I know any shops that did it in my area in the 60's growing up. I just learned something.

you do that so when a engine comes back in for freshening you go by the stamped number to see what engine it is. i kept everything on a 3X5 file card. still have them in the little meal file card box. i would guess they keep that info in the computer now days.

I knew a starter and alternator rebuilding shop that stamped the work that went out the door. The date and another number which represented the person that rebuilt the starter or alternator. I guess it was a form of quality control.

I recall about 10 years ago I had a matching number 69 SS 396 Chevelle, pulled the original 396 & stored it, built a 427 390 HP and had the machine shop stamp the decked pad with my initials and birthday date code. Figured if someone stole the car / engine I could trace it.

I know someone who built a 427 for a 1966 full size Chevrolet. He stamped "F*** you" on the pad.
