C1 Grab Bar End Cap screws

This is for my 1960. The grab bar end caps have a screw hole in the forward pointed end that screws into the frame of the cove insert. There is also a place for a screw on the bottom of the end cap, but I can't figure out what a screw there would screw into. The retainer bar with the nuts that slide into the grab bar and hold the grab bar to the body brackets is underneath the screw hole in the end cap. The only thing I can figure is that I will need to drill a hold in the retainer to attach a screw through the bottom of the end cap.

BTW, I am using reproduction retainer bar as the originals where not with my car. The grab bar was already off the car when I bought it, so I don't have the old parts to see how it was attached.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks,

    Don

Re: C1 Grab Bar End Cap screws

Donald, attached are a couple of photos from my 1960. The big bolts that hold the grab bar to the bracket are hidden behind the vinyl. The small screw I believe you are referring to hold the chrome trim ring from moving. There is a small threaded hole on the grab bar bracket that the small screws inserts; 2 large threaded holes for the clutch head screws and one small screw hole for the philips screw. I did not check my AIM, but it may have a diagram of the area in question.

Might help if I attach the photos.

Joe, mine does not have a hold for the philips screw. I guess they don't put then in the reproduction nut brackets. So I guess I'll have to drill some.

        Thanks,

Here's what that screw threads into. They sure allowed for a lot of sideways variation!

            Don,

As Bill's photo shows the reproductions have a slot for the screw to thread in to. It almost looks like two tabs with a space between them.

The thread nut retainer bar pulls right out. Take it out a post a photo.

I'll take mine back off and take a picture tomorrow.

Re: C1 Grab Bar End Cap screws

OK, attached is a picture of my grab bar and the retainer nut plate. If I am looking at Bill's picture correctly, there should be a slot in the nut plate about where I pointed the blue arrow in my picture. If that's correct, mine doesn't have it. The one I am trying to use is either from Paragon or Corvette Central. I've look at their web site and they both sell similar ones that do not have the slot.

Bill, If yours is loose, can you post a picture of just the nut plate?

                Thanks,

                  Don,

Yes, you are missing the slot that provides some adjustment for the screw location. You could line everything up, mark the hole, and then remove the nut plate to drill it.

I did finally find a picture of one, so I now know what the originals look like. I'll just do as Dennis suggested and just drill a hole for the screw.

                    Thanks,

Glad to hear that. Mine are very tight and I don't have a clutch head driver big enough to get them loose!

If you "hide" the big screws with the vinyl, expect a deduct for wrong installation.

Make a Clutch Head driver using a bolt. Grind two sides to fit.
