    65 fender panel problem ?

My 65 drivers side fender lower with the three shark gills is bubbling from a 2006 paint job, the reason being break fluid from the past has saturated the panel and I need to replace it and was wondering who makes the best fit and closest grey glass as original today, or if anyone has a way of fixing the fender without removing the panel. thanks JR

After stripping the glass I would clean and re-clean both sides with wax and grease remover very well. I then would spray the out side with gel coat which should prevent this from happening again. Put about four to six coats of gel coat on, immediately spray a coat of PVA over the gel coat as it needs to cure in the absence of air, and let it cure over night. Wash PVA off with water, sand, and then proceed with primer. PVA- (poly vinyl alcohol)

JR, don't cut the glass out for this. Follow Russ's instructions. Gel coat is the key. There's past discussion on this in the archives, specifically brake fluid penetration of the glass.

Thanks guys I will check out the archives on this, the rear most gill the back side of it is part of the firewall and I'm not sure if I could get at it to clean the area I will post a pic later. JR

The rear isn't all that important. It's just that it can't hurt to clean what you can. The rear gill is bonded to the firewall and as such probably didn't get any oil on the back side. The purpose of the gel coat is to keep what's on the back side there and not coming thru to the front.

Here is a good photo if you look at the stripped area it was wiped with thinner and overnight it looks wet again, if you look close you can see the dry area and the wet area, also the spots on the rear gill and fender area just behind that.

Remember that thinner is not as good a choice as wax and grease remover.
