Morris, are you referring to the shift lever vibrating when you are driving it and it is in 3rd or 4th gear? If so, does it happen under power, when decellerating, when cruising at a steady speed, or all three?

        Maury -

If your car was built prior to March 21st (below #17,000, when the shifter was moved from the transmission to a bracket on the crossmember), that's a typical buzz/rattle complaint. I've found this to be effective on '64-'66 transmission-mounted shifters:

        1. Unscrew the shift knob, remove the spring and T-handle.

        2. Add a few wraps of electrical tape around the plastic sleeves/bushings on the lever shaft so the T-handle fits more closely on the shaft, but doesn't stick or bind.

        3. Place an O-ring on the shaft so it sits where the bottom of the T-handle rests on the step in the lever, and re-install the T-handle, spring and knob.

John's fix might solve the symptom but not the cause. If your shifter is mounted to the transmission, the vibration may be from something worn/broken in the trans case. When my car had that problem, the synchros were bad and the mainshaft bearings were worn out. I would have it checked out so the transmission won't have a surprise for you one dark night.
