Wrecked Vette - Coming Back to Life

    Vette IMG_8665.jpgVette IMG_8667.jpgVette IMG_8669.jpgHi Team

I had this listed under "Top Surround Replacement" but this has gone far beyond that.

Basically, I drive my call on the weekends and since I am very busy during the week, my escape is when I take my Vette even to the corner store to get a gallon of milk. I am sure many of you are like that also. Well, Guess what......I needed something from Home Depot and took the Vette. Parked so far away that I felt I was parking at a Disney World parking lot wanting to wait for the tram to take me to the front doors of the store. Not good. I figure that far away is were all the work and construction trucks also park. You know the type of trucks I'm talking about. The ones that are HUGE and probably dont have rear view mirrors or if they did, using them is a remote option.

As I returned to my car with light bulb at hand, I noticed something strange. The nose was slightly up on my vettte. Well to make a long story short, someone has backed into the front of the vette. The bumper was not dented but since it moved up about an inch or less, the fiberglass on the top surround cracked. And so it begins.

I would like to say that I am amazingly impressed with Hagerty's insurance. They were AWESOME all the way. I would highly recommend them to anyone especially with this experience.

After looking at several places that work on Vettes and, of course as many of you, i have friends that say...."oh, I have a friend that works on Fiberglass". You know what that means.....They know how to patch a hole on a boat. In my opinion, the only thing that has really turned me off about this whole process was trying to find someone that works on these cars and knows how to. Since these cars are not around much anymore, it is rare to find someone that can work on a Vette. Bonding Strips? What are those, they would say.

I ended up at the Vette Smith in Miami. The guy there, Craig Priest, is amazing. He is actually even referenced in some of the Corvette books I have because he was the owner of the famous ZL-1 at one point. He has been working in Vettes probably for about 40 years. He and his team are amazingly good. The process of working with him was also very good. He worked directly with the insurance company and then worked with me on what other things I wanted to get done to the car. Zero suprises is what I like. We talk all the time, if not to talk about my vette, I like to hear his stories of all the amazing cars he had or worked on.

What I thought would be a problem is not at all. I see eye to eye with this guy. The first thing he did when I first met him was to ask what I want to do with the car. Makes sense becuse if what I wanted was to make it a show car, then that would take him in one direction. If all I wanted to was to make the basic repair, then I know he whould go the other route. I liked this very much and was a good basis for our mutual understanding.

Overall, besides the top surround I wanted to get some other things done. You know....the AsLongAs factor. Well, As Long As you are painting the front, you might as well ....... (fill in the blank here). Well, what can I tell you. Carb rebuild, new windshield, antenna, get wipers working, paint rest of the car.....

Color - this care was in 1971 Brands Hatch Green. Not very common. I had purchased it with some dark green color. After stripping off the paint and the NUMEROUS layers of rainbow colors, Craig and his top guy there "Chino" painted me a swatch of Brands Hatch Green. WOW - You have to see a swatch to appreciate the color. Amazing.

Well, enough said for now. I will keep posting to this thread to update everyone.

Please send in comments and recommendations. I need them!!!!!!

    Thanks

These were the pictures from when PART of the top surround was removed to expose the damaged area for Hagerty's to inspect.

OK, here the rear was stripped. No suprises found. Deck lid was removed, stripped and primed. I need to re-chrome my bumpers.

You have probably learned what I am about to say the hard way, but for others I never park a corvette in a position where some one else can park in front of the car. The front end of 63-up corvettes are too low for the other driver to see just where it is at. If the only option in the parking lot is the two row style of parking where someone will be parking facing the front of your car, I will back it into the parking stall. The rear of the vette is higher than the front and allows the other driver a better chance of seeing it. I also don't drive all the way into the stall as a corvette is shorter than other cars and so it leaves more room on the end of the space that another driver is going to pull up to your car. I hope this helps save other vettes from the same disaster yours saw.

Re: Wrecked Vette - Coming Back to Life

Peter, sorry to hear about this. There are three zones to every parking lot. The first zone is the spaces closest to the store. These are the ones that many women (I said many, not all) will drive around to find, or hover over them when they're being vacated. There is a lot of traffic in this area, and door marks are prevelent. The next zone is where there are some empty spaces and some spaces between the cars. This zone may have two cars parked next each other close to zone 1, but will have cars spaced out near the end of it. Zone 3 goes from this zone to the end of the parking lot. You don't want to park in zone 1 for obvious reasons. As you have noticed, you don't want to park in zone 3 because large trucks will park there, and you're car will also attract attention. Also, some a**hole will usually park right next to you. This leaves zone two, but you don't want to park near zone 1 because the other spaces around you may fill up. You don't want to park at the end because people will cut through the lot near your car. However, there are alway good spaces in the middle, especially away from the entrance to the store (such as between entrances).

I assume that the person who hit your car was not caught. Home Depot, Wal Mart, and several other big box stores have security cameras on the roof. If you have'nt waited too long, it is all on tape.

Did The Home Depot have a security camera "on" in the parking lot? Would like to catch the sucker that did that!

                Peter,
Glad you are on track to puting your car back together. Craig actually restored our car back in the mid 80's. Glad to hear you had a good experience.

Re: Wrecked Vette - Coming Back to Life

Went yesterday. The more I go to see the guys at the Vette Smith, the more I realize I dont know a whole lot about vettes.

1 - Fixed on my car and did not know that......When in 3rd and 4th gear, the timing advance increases. Wasnt working before, working now.

2 - Got the cable that allows my key to be removed when in reverse replaced.

3- Somehow, my car at one time was equiped with a traction bar. Interesting. I can send pics if anyone is interested in seeing the mounting portion of the traction bar.

4 - My windshield wipers work now!!!!!

5 - Idles like a dream!!!!! Original engine with about 36k miles. NICE.

Lots more. Here are the latest pics. I will keep you all posted.

Hello Everyone. Latest update, the rear end is looking AWESOME and ready to paint. Also changed out the new rear lower exhaust panel. The old one was damaged, as you can see, and as long as I am doing this, lets do it right. The guys at the Vette Smith are doing a great job. They all amaze me!!!!!

Re: Wrecked Vette - Coming Back to Life

Peter, Brandshatch Green is the second most popular color for 1971 with 3,445. Greens were very popular in the late 60's early 70's. I have an Ontario Orange 71 and get many coments of "I've never seen that color before, it must be rare." It is 4th in units ahead of red. Most of them were likely repainted another color. (RED) It is great that you are putting it back to the way it came, keep up the good work!

Hey Michael - Great info. So what was the most popular? I must say that I hardly NEVER see green or the orange vettes out there. I do see Red, white and once in a while, see silver. Im sure some are non original paint jobs. As you can see from the pictures, the green I had, I thought, was nice. However these guys at the Vette Smith painted a color swatch of the Brandshatch Green and WOW. It is amazing. It looks dark at night but in the sun it has a tint of blue in it. It is so original and unique that I know it would be an eye catcher.

                        Thanks

Most popular color was War Bonnet Yellow. Surprising especially considering there were two yellows offered that year. Take a look at the bottom of http://www.web-cars.com/corvette/opt...ptionyear=1971 or numerous other online and printed reference material. I'm always shocked how popular greens were back in the day. I assume many were repainted by newer owners, etc as you seemed to see many more reds, blues, etc.

Looking forward to some pics of your car painted.

Seems very complicated to me but these guys really know what they are doing. It is amazing. Every time I am there to see the car, I learn something new.
                            More updates soon.
