He was such an icon. READ HIS BOOK ''BEST DAMN GARAGE IN TOWN'' You will laugh for hours. When sex was safe and racing dangerous.

He was a real character. I had the pleasure (at the time pleasure was maybe not the proper word) of being around him in the late '60's when NASCAR ran the old Grand Am series. He had rather his car lead one lap than finish second. Win at all costs.

We were at Daytona for the Paul Revere 250. Smokey had either Bobby Unser or Paul Goldsmith driving the #13 Camaro. During practice, coming off the oval on to the road course the engine disintegrated, literally. They had been turning the engine 9,800-10,200 rpms during every practice that day. We were pitted next to them and I was curious and peaked at the tell-tale tach. When the engine blew/disintegrated the only parts salvageable were the valve covers, carburetor, and water pump. Best I could tell a connecting rod let go at 10,000+ and the ensuing melee wiped everything else out.

Smokey thought Paul Goldsmith was making a mistake moving over to Pontiac ( but Pontiac paid him win or lose ) so he just pushed down the pedal..balls out.

a friend of mine clark irwin who worked for GM at the tech center spent a lot of time at smokey's working on the NASCAR stuff. he sent me all the latest stuff they came up with as far as BBC engines were concerned. he told me about jr robbins and smokey and the girls that used to show up at the shop when they were working at night. that may have had something to do with the aids comment in the video.

Smoke, Zora, Guldstrand, and a couple more legends were, shall we say, characters. For the ones that heard Zora's eulogy, you would understand
