hinge pin for fuel pump question

I just rebuilt my fuel pump 4657 and find that the hinge pin that came with the kit is about 1/4" short. Mine was 1" to the small diameter and then another 3/16" or so.

The one in the kit was 13/16 and then another 3/16" Does anyone know where to get one or does anyone have one?

    Thanks
    Myron

I can tell you that the pin was never available from GM separately in SERVICE. However, I believe it was supplied as part of kit GM #5622175. Unfortunately, that kit was discontinued without supercession more than 30 years ago. If you could find one of those kits you'd have what you need, although I wouldn't use any rubber parts out of such a kit. Hopefully, it won't be that difficult and someone will have one.

I am not having much luck finding an original. Do you think that this will work? If not, what do you recommend? http://www.fastenal.com/web/products...ex?sku=0120669

Myron, Hopefully you bought a rebuilt kit that will handle the ethyl alcohol aka ethanol.
Try this company for the pin or the kit itself. For your 4657 the part number may be: FPA241. But I am not possitive that's the correct #.

Too soft. The pin needs to be hardened carbon steel

Hal Houghton is a great help, and a little known resource. I found him through Hemmings and have been using him ever since. I recommend his pump kits, highly!

Any idea as to whether any of these 3 rods would work? Hard to cut? Will I be able to peen each end over? Any other ideas on a pin replacement? The rebuilder companies have not been helpful.

I second Joe's recommendation for Hal Houghton. I had him rebuild my 4657 pump for my '64, he did a fantastic job and is a pleasure to do business with. He is what I would consider a true craftsman. I reinstalled the newly rebuilt pump and recently went on an 800 mile trip with the car and had zero problems. Hal's kits that he installs are compatible with today's ethanol fuels.

Re: hinge pin for fuel pump question

The problem is that I purchased a rebuild kit and rebuilt the pump. Now all I need is the proper length pivot pin. None of the rebuilders will sell me just a pin. The thought of paying someone $135 to rebuild my rebuilt pump for a stinkin $2 does not sit well with me.

Hal can help you with your problem. Try calling him. Keep in mind, however, that original style pins are not reproduced. It is possible to re-use your original pin once (maybe twice) for rebuilding. If it's gone, it's GONE. You can make one yourself if you have access to a lathe. Reproduction pivot pins are grooved for an e-clip instead of using a special washer and bending the tabs as originals were.
