C1 Tar top batteries

On original tar-top Delco batteries, did the "tar" cover the entire top of the battery or was the tar material confined to the low areas around the 6 raised cells.....? In their "Restorer" article from last summer, Bob Baird and Bob Muhs appear to apply the tar only to the low areas around the cells..... the raised areas appear to be free of the applied tar...... Is this correct?

I've never seen an original, "un-restored" tar top battery so I'm in the dark about this......

The tar covered everything but the posts, low spots and over the tops of the lead plates. The tar formed the seal on the top.

At the North Central Regional this weekend I heard from two different judges it should not cover the raised area around the filler caps. This was 58-60 & 65 classes. Don H.

This is the battery in my '62.

I still have an old one in the garage from my 62, the rectangular plastic pieces (that the caps are screwed into) are above the tar.

The pictures are correct. I coppied an original 65 tar top battery that I still have.
