67 Outside Rear View Mirror Orientation

Is there a correct orientation of the mirror date code and retainer ring gap on a 67 (non-bowtie) outside mirror?

I have assumed that the date code is at the top, and opposite the split in the retainer ring on the bottom. But should the retainer ring split be on the long side from the mirror pivot, or the short side. Or is it one of those random things.

I just got a restored original mirror with a repro glass and retainer ring, compared it to my original, and the orientation is opposite. But maybe my original is wrong, as I have had the glass out to fix the pivot. When I took it apart some years ago, I noticed a small tool mark at the position of the split in the retainer ring, and this mark was on the long side from the pivot.

Am I just assuming wrong here.

Does anyone have a picture of a correctly oriented outside mirror, and mirror glass with date code and retainer ring split.

    Jerry,

Did you compare the original mirror glass to the repro? My old mirror glass (but non-original, Ajax dated 1968) is a slightly larger diameter than the repro, as is the snap-ring. The repro mirror-glass moved around easily (side to side, up and down) inside the chrome mirror head.

      Scott,

Yes I noticed that, and that's why I called the glass and ring, repro's. The repro glass seems slighty smaller and the retaining ring has about a 1/4" plus gap in it. The original glass fits nice and tight, and the retaining ring has less than an 1/8", closer to a sixteenth gap in it.

I have several NOS 67 mirrors (6). All were bought in the 70's so they are replacement mirrors with no bowtie emblem at the top. They are DMI which I believe to be Donnley and there is NO pattern for the placement of the date code placed on the mirror. The split ring has a tendency to be placed at the top of the mirror. Not exactly at the top but close on each mirror.

No definite orientation to either item. These were mass manufactured and assembled with random placement.
