I have a '67 with factory A/C with an original reconed speaker, looking for a better sound. Has anyone purchased one of the aftermaket speakers on e-Bay that handles more Watts, also the AM/FM original factory looking radios that is a stereo?I have a nice decent driver which is driven a lot, not worry about judging. Thanks,Tom from hot AZ.........

You are not going to get the kind of sound that most folks are used to hearing in the 21st century from radio and speaker technology that is 50 years old. So, if you want better sound you'll first need to upgrade the speakers. However, with an original radio you must use speakers that are at least 8 ohms impedence (10 ohms is best but I don't think you'll find any modern, high performance speakers in that rating). If this provides satisfactory sound, you're there. If not, you'll need to upgrade to a modern radio, too. However, carefully preserve your original for possible future re-installation if you sell the car.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Aftermarket radio speaker and radio
Tom,
My spell check doesn't correct either, but as far as the speaker go's, I am sending my new one back at my radio repair mans advice as he said they are not correct and eventually damage the radio.
Joe's advice sounds muck like the radio guys.

You can get great sound out of an original radio if it is properly adjusted and is connected to a correct reproduction speaker. I have a '65 with a factory AM/FM and the sound will drive you out of the car if you crank it up. Similarly, I had a '63 with the Wonderbar radio which also played like it did back in the day.
If you have an original radio, connect with Jerry Rudbeck and ask him to go over it for you.. The difference when it comes back will be astonishing. Similarly, there is a company out in Minnesota by the name of Electro-Tech, Inc. who will supply a "correct" replacement speaker to connect up with your original radio. It is critical, not just important, that you match the speaker to the radio in terms of impedance. A miss-match will give you lousy sound at best and will cook the output stage of your radio at worst.
Good luck,

Re: Aftermarket radio speaker and radio
Tom,
Joel has very good advice as did Joe.
I talked with Jerry and feel VERY comfortable with him and just did so today via E-mail. I am sending my new speaker (wrong for radio) and getting my original re coned as per his sugestion.
I talked with Jerry the other day and in conversation he told me that the radio in my 67 was a 63 and sure enough I went and checked and it was. He knows his stuff and is reasonable.

Re: Aftermarket radio speaker and radio
Thanks Joel,
I should have mention I did check the Similar Threads and on May 12,2010 and there was a thread about the C2 Radio speaker.
I do planned on purchasing one from Electro-Tech,Inc. on Monday. I need to fix a few things under the dash
anyway, so the fun begins.
Thanks for the help everyone.

All------
You can get decent sound out of these old radios and speakers if they are in good working order. Loud? You bet; you always could. As good as contemporary radios and speakers? No way.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Aftermarket radio speaker and radio
I have just called Electro-Tech. Inc. {www.turnswitch.com} and spkoke with Greg and they are out
of stock of the 1958-1967 Corvette radio speakers...Bad part is they lost the manufactuer who made
the coil bracket and they are looking for another to resume selling them, looks like 5 to 6 weeks the earliest
they made be available again, or even longer.
