    Rear Spindle Question....

My '64 Roadster needs new inner and outer bearings, seals, etc. I was reading up information on the rear spindles and found questionable torque info. My shop manual says to torque the large spindle nut to 50 ft-lbs., whereas another book I read says approximately 100 ft-lbs !
Can someone give me the correct torque for the rear wheel inner large spindle nut?

    Thanks,
    Larry

Larry -- 50 ft-lbs on the big drive flange nut was only specified for 1963 (initial production to Nov 2nd '62). This was a slip-fit design. Then Nov 2 to 19th, revised same spindle to incorporate interference fit on outer bearing. Then, Nov 19th reduced thickness of spindle flange washer and introduced a new flange assy. Drive flange nut torque increased from 50 ft-lb to 100. Then, Dec 3rd new design spindle with interference fit inner and outer bearings; same washer and flange as previous; 100 ft-lbs.

These revisions were issued in Tech Service Bulletin DR # 599 (June 10, 1963). Reproduced in the Restorer, Vol 5 # 3.

I doubt very much GM would revert to 50 ft-lbs for 1964. The spindle design changed again for disc brakes in the '65 MY.

The torque setting of 50 ft/lbs was increased to 100 ft/lbs effective November 19 1962 according to Chevrolet TSB DR #599 issued June 10 1963, page 3, para C, line 6. (I think that's right, I'm going from memory.)

This is the same TSB that introduced the interference fit inner bearing races.

Thanks to all of you. I should be okay with 100 ft/lbs for my 64.

It's 100 lb/ft plus any additional torque required to install the cotter pin.
