    More On Oil Filters

I found out today that at least some AC-Delco spin-on oil filters now have the glued-on, "cardboard" end caps on the filter medium, like Fram oil filters. In fact, they may very well be manufactured by Fram since AC-Delco has not manufactured an oil filter in years. These filters also have plastic center cores and the flimsy "spring steel" tensioner. I'm sure this construction is adequate or GM would not be using it, especially on new vehicles. However, I don't like it. These days, I think that WIX is the only major brand and widely available filter with high quality construction.

I changed to Wix a couple of years ago for all of my cars because of that specific reason. I like metal construction, not paper and plastic.

I've used nothing but Wix filters for the last 20 years. I feel they are the best on the market.

NAPA, Carquest, and a couple more companies have their filters made by WIX. Some of the low usage items are made by the original manufacturer and reboxed.

Car quest made by Wix is what I use. They even make their own version of the PF 141 cannister style filter.

              All------

One other thing I should have mentioned. I have not evaluated the internal configuration of the currently available AC-Delco Ultraguard filters (which are now available again). These are synthetic media filters and of "premium quality". I can say that the previous generation Ultraguard filters did have steel filter media end caps and steel cores. However, I don't know if the current ones are the same. Regardless, I don't think that any of the filters except WIX use a coil spring filter element tensioner.

I have been using the AC Delco Duraguard PF2232 for my 68, 70, and 1985. This filter has some good qualities like a perforated steel liner on the inside. This is GM's diesel oil filter.

Personally, I would not use that filter. It contains an integral by-pass valve set at 15 psi. All 1968-91 Corvettes use a filter with no integral by-pass valve and a by-pass valve incorporated into the oil filter adapter. I don't think that having "dual by-pass valves" is a good idea although it might do no harm.

I believe a PF-35 and PF-2232 are basically the same except for the by-pass valve feature.
