    63 AIM, Section 1 Sheet A31

Does the "luggage stop" provide any structural support to the body? I have a long standing issue with the clearance between the convertible top deck and the body being extremely small. My "luggage stop" is loose (some rivets came out) and someone suggested that this could be allowing the body opening to close in, thereby contributing to the lack of clearance. Does that sound feasible?

If you're talking about what is labeled "support" - the sheet metal piece that's riveted across the bottom and to the fenderwells at the ends - no, that item does not significantly contribute to structural stiffness.

It does, however, contribute significantly to lack of floor pan sag; that's why it's riveted to the floor pan all the way across the car.

In that case I was wrong. It is a structural member. I know the top rivets on the sides tend to come loose from stuff banging into this "support", and I recall you can't get to the bottom of the rivet because the frame is in the way. It's a good idea to use largers rivets at this location on both sides with washers to spread out the load.

Steve, I read his thread and saw your earlier thread (2006) on the subject of a '63 convertible luggage stop. I own an simular early (#1841) '63 convertible and I have the same problem with my "missing" luggage stop. were you abel to find a solution sofar and would you share this with me.
Also would like to see some pictures of your early '63 luggae stop (if you have). I find it all very confusing and since I live in the Netherlands I do not have much to compair it with. Thanks Ruud (ruudzeller@yahoo.com)

              Steve and Ruud,

Here are a couple-three pics of the luggage stop and frame of a 63 Roadster about 16,000 SN. This Roadster is the earliest that I have seen with these brackets for the floor pan. I have seen them on 64 Roadster and Coupes but earlier 63 Coupes that I have restored did not have these floor brackets. They are shown in the assembly manual and dated 3/21/62.
Even if these floor brackets do exist on you earlier 63 I would definately use Rivets on the Luggage Stop.
Hope these pics help even though they are from a later 63.

                JR,

If you are referring to the inboard frame brackets shown in your first picture I was under the impression all 63's had them. They are on my second week November 62 built coupe.
