Painting Front Grill Area, Etc on a '65

I am about to get some paint on my '65 coupe after about 2 months of getting ready. My question concerns how the front ends these vehicles were originally painted. I guess the grill area was painted before the grill was installed. Did they mask off the area behind the grill (the radiator support, etc)? Or did overspray get onto those areas and especially the radiator support?
On the 'gills' on the front fender; did they mask behind those gills or not?
Thanks for any advice on this.

The blackout process was used to cover overspray from painting the body.

What William Clupper says is true...however that was during the paint line process back in the day. Your situation is different. Many things will affect your course of action. Is the body on or off? Have you already blacked out the engine bay? If not no problem, black out after car has been painted, if so, cover it. Paint will go everywhere.

The body is on the frame. I see now that the car was first painted and then the engine bay, etc was blacked out. I have already blacked the car out so I will mask this before painting. Tks for the help.

Mike, if you intend to have the car flight judged, keep in mind that it should "appear" to have been painted first then blacked out. Chip.
