    56 Fan Shroud Bolt Question

What do the lower fan shroud bolts look like that attach the lower portion of the shroud to the crossmember? The JG suggests that it is secured with two 5/16 hollow headed bolts? Are these tapered with cutting threads since there is no nut on the inside of the crossmember? What does the head look like? Any headmarking?

    Thanks, Mark

Re: 56 Fan Shroud Bolt Question

    Mark,

I had this question and Gary Chestnut provided a photo of an original. Unfortunately, I don't know how to attach it here, but the screw looks to be a 5/16-24 type "F" self-tapping (from the threads formed in my crossmember) probably about 3/4-1" long since it goes through the shroud and a body shim pad (the ribbed type) to isolate the shroud. Head is a recessed hex (1/2") w/o washer with a flat screwdriver slot across the flats. I had no luck trying to find this specific screw so I had to get creative. Hope this helps.

Re: 56 Fan Shroud Bolt Question

That would be awesome. Looking forward to seeing it. I appreciate the efforts! Now that I think of it, it is reminiscent of the bolt that was used on a mid-year spare tub. Same concept anyway.

One more question...was a piece of a rubber frame pad used to andwich between the shroud and the crossmember, or a whole pad or something different?

          Thanks much.

              Mark,

Need to clarify what you're looking for. I read your request one way and Rod read it another.

              Are you looking for:
              1) shroud side to frame bolts
              2) shroud to front cross member screw with body mount pads in between

Re: 56 Fan Shroud Bolt Question

                Gary,

As stated in my first post, I'm looking for the shroud to front cross member screws with body mount pads in between (I guess they had body mount pads under there). From what I've seen, the other screws and bolts for the reassembly and attachment of the fan shroud for a 56 are readily available from a variety of re-manufacturers. Is the bolt in question similar to the bolt used for a mid-year tire tub attachment to the frame? Thanks for the help, Gary.

                  Mark,

Rod was correct and I mis-read your request and thought it was the side bolts.

Attached photo's courtesy of Dave Smith's outstanding 1957 Bowtie.

It's my understanding that not all cars had the cushions between the shroud and the front cross member installed. It was only one cars where the shroud had the potential to rub. In the cars and bare '57 frames I've had over the years, not all had a screw hole in the front cross member.

Re: 56 Fan Shroud Bolt Question

Thanks Gary. Both of my 56's have the two holes in the front crossmember for fan shroud attachment, so I'll try to fabricate something similar as far as a fastener to attach them. I'll make the determination later on whether or not I'll need the pads in between the shroud and the cross member. Thanks so much for the pictures and the help. Very informative!

Re: 56 Fan Shroud Bolt Question

Sorry, one more question....any clue as to what the two oval slots were used for (if anything) in the front (radiator side) of the lower shroud piece? Just curious if anyone knows. They went to the trouble of putting them in there, but don't know if it was for a specific purpose on a 56/57 or if they had purpose on another application.

                      Thanks again,
                      Mark
