At the time the bulletin was released, Wabash Products #KB-318-HH was the specified paint. The phone number for them in the bulletin was 800-326-7269 or 812-232-6097. Not sure if they are still active or not.

I ordered some of this paint years ago for a very small area on my muffler that was peeling. It took forever to fully dry, I'm talking weeks, even after running the car at normal operating temperatures multiple times. As a result, some dirt became embedded in the paint. I'd use something else today if I had to do it over again.

Couple of pics from my '89, 20K miles, just the very rear of the muffler bottom and the back of the muffler with paint, just enough to not attract attention from the rear of an approaching car.

Here are photos of the original mufflers on my 86 roadster. These OEM mufflers were taken off of the car when it had less than 4000 miles on it.

            FWIW.

A paint I've been using with great results is Duplicolor High Heat Ceramic, semi-gloss.
You'd have to check the color/sheen match but I shot the complete cat back chambered system on my 92 with it 4 years ago and it still looks new.

From what I have read so far I dont think the painting started till 86. Up until that time I think 84 and 85 may have had mufflers left natural. Maybe some one can verify this.

I'm the original owner of my 23,000 mile '84 and can verify there was no paint on the exhaust or mufflers. My '89 I bought new did have a partial blackout, like another post mentioned, just enough to make it look black when viewed from the rear.

My 1996 LT4 has black paint like yours Pat. Also noticed that the exhaust pipe is slightly reduced in size where it goes into the muffler and welded.

Agree, no paint on 1984's. My 1984 Corvette (June 84) had the pipes pointing down. I hated that look. I immediately when I saw 85 Corvettes ordered the 1985 GM Factory mufflers and replaced them with the 85 style mufflers. I still have one 84 muffler like brand new and 4 extra original never used factory clamps. The 85 mufflers rear pipes were blacked out, that was about all the factory painted, just like the pic's Peter has shown.

Here's a set that came off of a very low mile 89 convertible, years ago. The black paint is original. They have been in my attic for at least 20 years. They wouldn't fit in my desk drawer !! LOL

Just wanted to share. I painted mine with POR-15 Semi-Gloss and it's a good match tot he original paint. Cures hard and resists heat. Just a thought.
