Message back to Ralph: Not sure how much money your RC-26 cap is worth, but obviously, it's worth a lot of good discussion and learning here. More's going to be known as a result of your question. Thanks so much for posting! Keep 'em coming!!

How do you clean a rusty cap, can you soak it in something?

I have had great success with OOOO steel wool. Can get it at Home Depot. They vary in grades, O, OO, OOO, OOOO. I actually use it on my restored radiator caps after they acquire some white oxidation. It does not harm the finish on the cap and cleans it extremely well....Good luck...Regards. ARA

                  Re: RC 26 Radiator Cap
I have a 15# RC-26 cap that looks exactly like the one Don Lowe has posted, except mine has two thin closely spaced lines around the left side AC logo. There is also a very slight double stamp at the bottom of the C & the 2 in the RC-26. What may be of more interest is the back side of the cap. On top of (with cap upside down) the aluminum disc that goes under the spring is a 3/8" wide circular floating seal or gasket. The seal is black rubber or some composite material that has small white/grey flecks in the material. I have probably a hundred or so old radiator shop discarded caps, but have never seen a cap with this gasket. It does not appear to be something homemade or added after production. Maybe I missed the thread where this was discussed. If not, was this part of a production RC-26 cap? Has anyone else seen these gaskets on their RC-26 caps?

Glen - The AC RC-26 radiator pressure caps came with a composite material gasket as you describe. In fact from what I have seen all of the AC radiator pressure caps like the 307 and RC-26 caps that were used on Corvettes with the aluminum overflow tanks had that gasket. Pete

Peter, I probably should have known that, but did not. Thanks.

I hate to dredge this back up again but I'm trying to figure out which cap I should be looking for. I have an early production (#3407) '69 L-36 4spd w/o A/C. My guess is that I need one of the caps posted by Alan or Don - the only difference being the orientation of the "15 #, RC-26" Script. Though the rivet on Don's appears to have a larger/flatter rim encircling the outside of the rivet.

For what it's worth, I have posted a picture of the typical repop being sold for $30 by the usual suspects. Notice the placement, size and spacing of the "15 #, RC-26" and open arrow heads. I also see several other subtle differences but I won't belabor the point.

                          Floyd -

Which cooling system (radiator and expansion tank) do you have?

RC26 but, any repop cap is one that Ray Charles could easily detect.

The normally expected radiator cap for a 1969 L-36 non A/C with aluminum expansion tank is a RC-26. Here is a photo of said cap this one has been restored. Also the rivet is not flat across it has a raised rounded ring above the surface of the cap body and in the center it has a valley maybe about an 1/8" to about 1/4" in depth. Also no auction on this item sorry
