No big deal you say
, well I also constructed the plywood. From the research I've done while working on my 1960 restoration, the reproduction boards are not the correct wood, fir plywood or something similar rather that souther yellow pine. And the color is often more black overall than the originals. I did research on this forum as well as broadly on the internet and was not able to find any 3/8" 5-ply plywood as the originals were constructed.
I happen to have a decent home woodworking shop. So I started with rough sawn 4 quarter souther yellow pine boards, planed them smooth and cut to 6" wide boards. This allow me to resaw them edge wise on the band saw. To make up the 3/8" plywood I needed thin strips that were 1/16" (0.0625") thick and 3/32" (0.09375) thick, so I resawed the board a little overside so that I could do the finish size with the thickness planer.
If this doesn't judge better than a reproduction board, I will be very disappointed
. The only negative is that I was unable to come up with an easy way to add any of the football shaped patches, but I have seen a number of pictures of what were identifed as original boards that did not have the patches. I also made my own posi CAUTION decal. Per the 1958-60 Corvette Restoration Handbook, the fonts are all wrong on the reproduction decals and from pictures of originals, I believe the repros are also more red that the original, so I also adjusted the color a little.
