I too used a reproduction oil cannister on my car and it leaked. I noticed the difference in steel thickness, sent my original to Ken at Orindales and no more problems. I go out of my way to use original GM parts on my car as most repro stuff is junk and this is another example.

I'm in the process of rebuilding mine. I've taken a few of them apart. In order to put them back together, you need a 1/2" self-locking external retaining ring. I had to buy them in a package of 100. I've got 99 left, and I intend to keep a few for spares.

Can you tell me how to disassemble my filter canister? Also, shood the filter cartridge set above the canister edge when resting on the interior wedge support? My filter is almost flush with the canister edge.
