NOS NOS NOS 53-54 mufflers!!

I found these mufflers locally, paid $250 for set. History, the seller purchased a 54 vette 12 years ago and these mufflers came with car. Never mounted. The mufflers are tagged with part #s 3706222 and 3706221 Noland Adams pg.72 lists only 1 part# 3706232. The wrappers are GM bags. One muffler is ink stamped in large letters Plant 53 Flint Michigan. One muffler has a tag To chevrolet Plant 53 Flint michigan Arvin Industries INc. Seymour, Indiana. The inlet pipes are stamped 6223 and 6224. Interesting how the part numbers are sequenced 3706221-3706224! These mufflers are 13 inches in length, as on blueprints, but only reported as replacements by Noland (20 inch mufflers correct.) The lt (drivers side) exhaust pipe, 3706223 Is different (not symmetrical) to the rt exhaust pipe. 1 pictures shows the difference. I installed this set sunday, they fit perfect ! While these part numbers are circe 1953 and the original SERVICE part numbers, the packaging on these mufflers would indicate a later 60's distribution. These mufflers were discontinued from SERVICE without supercession in May and July, 1972.

GM #3706232 was never a SERVICE part number.

You've got some neat mufflers. I have a similar pair that were bought and put in storage back in '71 for my '54. To the best of my knowledge, they do not exactly duplicate the appearance of originals however.

As far as I know, originals have end caps which are slightly convex and look like this:

FWIW, I agree with Jim and believe his picture is an original 53-55 6-cyl muffler.
