Paint color on 70 harmonic balancer

I did a search but didn't see the answer i need. I am building a 70 LT-1 and need to know what color the harmonic balancer came through with. I have seen black, orange and gray - which is right?

I do not have a LT-1, however my 1970's 350/300 has a dirty, faded, but original orange one when it left the St. Louis factory.

Thanks Jim. I have seen several on rebuilds that were black and they look good although most of the more original looking have been orange.

        Steve------

Through 1982 the harmonic balancers on all Chevrolet engines were painted with the engine. So, the balancer on all 1970 engines would have been Chevrolet orange, exactly the same as the rest of the engine as painted at the engine plants.

There was one exception to this rule. That exception was 1969 ZL-1. Those engines had the harmonic balancer (as well as other engine parts) component painted (i.e. painted as individual pieces off the engine) and were BLACK.

          Steve,

FYI - The rear portion of the balancer had little if any orange paint on it as it was installed on the engine when it was painted. You may want to think about applying a light coat so you won't fill in the fine lines on the balancer.

Thanks Ron, I wondered about that as I couldn't see them bothering to try and hit the back completely.
