    Operation Check

Last night, my son was helping me go through the NCRS Ops checks. I was shocked to find two things wrong:
    (1) the glove box bulb was burnt out. (2) when I turned on the radio, it worked for a few seconds and quit.

I changed out the 4.4 amp radio fuse but still no go. The dash lights still work on the radio dial. What is the biggest cause of the radio no longer working?

would the original speaker blown? I would plug it into a known working speaker and go from there

      Clark,
Sorry to hear about your failures, at least you have some time to try and repair. When it comes time to install that glove box light install the shade in such a way that when the door opens the light will not shine into the drivers eyes. I lost a point because of this at Joplin last year. This is in the latest judging guide, but my car (bought new by me) must have had an installer who didn't read the book.
If your radio has to come out for repair I can recommend Jerry Rudbeck in Simpsonville, SC for a super job. Back to the garage! Bill

Bill, Is there a correct position for the shade? I have my 63 angled to the pass. side, I was thinking maybe thats to far.Bill as far as the Radio make a few checks with things like the speaker connection, and antenna ,should be receded all the way into radio head. Good luck.

          Clark,

On my 67, the fuse for the radio is a 10 amp fuse, and the glove box light, and instrument lights are on different circuits.

If the 4 amp fuse you put in blew out again, the issue is probably in the fuse size.

If the radio when cold, goes on, works for a while then suddenly goes off (and the fuse doesn't blow), the issue is between the speaker and main transistor of the radio.

I had an incorrect speaker(without the little transformer) in my 67. The radio would initially work fine, but then the transistor, or something in the radio, would heat up and all of a sudden the radio would go dead. I would turn it off, let it cool, and the same thing would happen again. Finally, I pulled the radio, changed the main transistor, and got a correct speaker. Works perfect now.

Start with the simple things first, fuse, connectors, radio ground. If you think it's the speaker or radio itself, pull it. You can actually bench test a radio with the correct speaker, a gypo antenna, and a battery or battery charger. If you need a service manual, parts list, and wiring diagram for the radio, send me an email with your email address.
