    Joe,
I haven't done that for years but when I was a mechanic at a chevy dealership 70 & 71 I did one without removing the front engine mounts.

All the vettes were shoved at me because they didn't pay well for the amount of work.

But I remember taking the bellhousing bolts out and removing the trans and the bellhousing together and beating the flat rate time that was in the book.

In the book it was the removal that took the most time. Not easy but with TLC you will do a better job yourself than one that is doing it for money and cracks the floor in your vette because it ALMOST slides back enough to come out.

Thanks for the reply I am thinking about doing it myself because it will be a few weeks before I can get the car in a shop, I was trying to figure out what I may run into. I have to work off the garage floor, special tools and typical problems. I'm hopeing I could just drop the drive shaft, remove the speedo cable and shift linkage, unbolt the trans from the bell and slide it back out but that don't sound like that will happen like that. I don't want to get half way through and find out I have to lower the engine or worse yet screw something up. I have side pipes so that opens it up a lot.

You'll find a lot of procedure suggestions in the archives.... BUT, at best it's a miserable job. The engine definitely must be lowered & you will wish that crossmember was removable! Maby working without a lift would be easier.....at least you won't be bench pressing that 120 lb of metal.....Only hope I never have to do it again...

Joe, I see if I can make this easy as possible for you, unbolt front of driveshaft ,shifter and linkage (unbolt levers from trans. don't touch the adjustments)speedo cable, rev. switch and wires unhook, remove trans.lower mount bolts(2) ,jack engine (wood block on top of jack pad) just enough to see the transmisson mount raise up enough to remove the trans.mount totally, remove the four bolts that attach trans. to bell hsg. This next step is important because this will help you position the trans. for removel. First slide trans back til you rest the tip if the input shaft on the lip of bell housing, Next is rotate the trans. so the side cover plate is facing the ground and then push the tail shaft of trans. up against the floor and slide back, this should give you the additional clearance to get the front of transmisson down and out. good luck, I tryed to to give you a step by step I may have missed a step. but you have the important stuff.

I just remembered the front exhaust pipes and starter. and be sure to leave jack under oil pan to support the engine while doing clutch.

            Edward,
your right on with the detailed removal and that's why I would remove the bellhousing bolts because it helped when you twisted the trans.

My 63 has the floor boards cracked by a mech that didn't do what you described.

I think a owner will take the time to do it right as a paid wrench will try to beat the clock.
