1972 storage compartment

Can anyone tell me if the battery compartment should have 2 rubber bumpers for the lid? Mine has 2 screws in the only holes in the 'lip' on the latch side and the holes are counter sunk. The aim is not real clear on this (at least to me!!). Without bumpers the lid goes down way too far. The holes are not evenly spaced from the latch either which seems weird.

Peter,

It sounds as if you're missing the foam rubber gasket that is glued onto the frame that the lid closes against.

Is that the only compartment that has a foam gasket? My other 2 compartments (jack & storage) have 2 rubber bumpers.

Yes, that is the only compartment that has the gasket. This is spelled out in the 1970-72 Technical Information and Judging Guide.
