    1960 Rear Spring Shackle Nuts

I am not certain that the shackle nuts on my car are original, but they are plain hex nuts. Paragon lists "correct" marsden nuts in their catalog, CC makes no reference to the type of nuts they sell with the shackles and based on the photo, appear to be plain hex nuts.

What type of nut is correct for the shackle?

      Joe,
I do not think they are Marsden nuts if you are referring to the "castle" design. I think they are oval locking nut where the outer side is distorted and when tightened this causes increased friction thus the locking. The nuts on my car, which I am sure have never been removed, look like this type.

        Joe,

Pic below is from my car and shows what I believe to be the original nut. Looks like plain steel to me, not Marsden.

I just went out and double checked the shackles I took off of the car and they have plain steel nuts on them. Also in the 58-60 restoration handbook, there is a picture that shows plain steel nuts. I put the Marsdens on when I put the car back together, but made a note that was not what was on the car originally.

Edit: as a reference, I received a bunch of parts when I got the car and there was a pair of service replacement shackles with Marsden nuts on the. So it may have been something that worked it way into production after my car was built and was also used for the service replacement parts.

Thank you Thomas. That confirms what I suspected. Everyone I have spoken with stated that their C1 had plain hex nuts on the shackle bolts. That is what I am sticking with.

Were the shackle bolts and backing plates painted? When I removed the rubber bushings, it appeared that there was black paint on the shackle bolts under the rubber bushings. I considered that it might be black from the bolts rubbing on the rubber bushings for 50+ years. I did not see evidence of black paint on the back side of the shackle bolts or the backing plates.
