I'm redoing the power steering in my '63 coupe. What finish should be applied to: steering box, pitman arm, control valve, cylinder and idler? I appreciate any and all suggestions. Richard Powell

Richard,
I'll take a stab at this.
Steering box is semi flat black, pitman arm is natural , control valve is semi flat black along with cylinder and idler arm.- Top

Tim, I think the judging manuel will let the steering box go either way painted or natural. at least for now until the manuel comes out.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

If you want to put yellow paint daubs on the steering box, remember the yellow paint goes first and then the blackout paint. Don't fully paint the steering box and then add yellow paint on top of the painted box.Region VII Director (serving members in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas).

Re: Finish on '63 steering box, pitman arm, control valve, cylinder and idler arm.
First of all, thanks to you guys for helping out a novice in the area of finishes. For clarification, would "semi flat black' fall between "flat" and "semi-gloss"? And is "natural" for a pittman arm that grayish color like an exhaust manifold? This car is going to be driven so I'm not going by the book, but I like to stay as close to the book as I can. Thanks again.- Top

Rich, I can tell another way to keep the natural look and protect it from rusting, I used a stain clear it keeps the original look and can be be brought at the Home depots or Lowes in the spray cans.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top
