65 Valve Covers

Were the retaining wings and screws for the valve covers painted the same color as the valve cover or left unpainted?

Assume you are talking small block.

My 66 TIM&JG says the base engine has indented hex-head bolts and uniquely shaped plate (washer) painted engine color. Assume same for 65 small block with steel valve covers.

They were in place when the engine was painted. To be 100% correct, the valve cover should not have any paint under them.

Paint whould be on the edge of the gaskets on the steel valve cover cars also...
