    C1 Fuel Tank Strap Question

I just got my Quanta replacement fuel tank in my 1960, what a pain. Got it in then had to take it out, forgot the straps. The straps I got from Paragon came with a small part that is call the support. I believe it is the same part referred to in the AIM as a support. I have two pictures attached, the first is of the AIM that appears to show this support wedged into the underbody retainer bracket assembly, then the bolt goes through this support then thread into the retainer bracket. I also attached a picture of the underbody retainer bracket and the support I got with the tank straps from Paragon.

Is this the way it goes? What is the purpose of the support? If I have it oriented correctly, it doesn't seem to serve any purpose

    Thanks,

    Don

The bolt goes from the top through the support, then through the hole in the strap, then through the body, and then threads into the bracket riveted to the underbody. The support keeps the strap end from distorting when you tighten the bolt. I've found it works better to start with a longer than stock bolt, pull the strap down, and then put the correct length bolt in.

What are the 2 smaller holes in the support for?

        Don,

I found that in order for my tank to sit low enough, I had to bend the flanges. Did you do this or did the tank fit out of the box?

The piece pictured on the right is the bracket, not the support. The two holed in the bracket are for the rivets that attac it to the body

Tom, I also had to bend the upper corner flanges down in order to get the tank cover to sit flush. Many years ago, but I remember it well...

The rivets look like this from the top. The bolt and rectangular washer like this. See pics. Sorry, I don't have a picture of the braket from under the car. Need two people to set those rivets. One under the car and one above.

I really didn't have to bend the flanges any more than they were already bent to get the tank down into the area. I used a rubber mallet to tap on the back edges of the flange to snug the tank forward and down into the 'box'.

I have not tried the cover yet as I need some longer bolts to get the straps started and pulled down as Mike suggested above.
