Vin tag on 1963- was it rivited or spot welded?

I was getting a vin verification on my 2 vettes, one completing a total restore and one waiting it's turn.

I see that the vin tag is rivited on my 1967 but not so on the 1963.

The 1963 is spot welded and shows that the metal was cleaned under the weld with a disc sander.

I bought this car in 1971 and it was in my posession since then.

Was this the way they did it?

I believe spot welding on the vin is correct but it appears that the original spot welds were drilled out (or a spot weld cutter was used) and as you pointed out the base metal was ground and the tag spot welded on.
I am not sure how it would judge.
Hopefully someone else can tell us.

I pulled up the similar thread and saw the pics and they were also ground under multiple spot welds (crude).

Now mine actually looks great compared to what I saw.

Don't worry cause that SN Tag was done at the factory and has NEVER been messed with! They were all done that way from 63 to 67!

You can bet the farm on that tag being original!!!

Probably not. Only '63-'64 were spot-welded.

Nah, the other Corvettes 65-67 has those funny little things called "Rosettes". Made it easy for the 67 fake 435's to be born again in Texas!!!

Yes, 63's were spot welded. Note that if a weld let go, your local Chevy dealer would spot weld it again. Sometimes they didn't do a particularly neat job (they apparently didn't know some guy with a red hat would be studying it 49 years later).
