    Blue Door Label Font?

Does anybody know what font is used on this 1970 door label date code? I'm guessing it was typed by some type of IBM typewriter. Thanks! 38942434168_large.jpg

The 1970 & 1971 (likely 1969, as required, as well) Cert Labels were populated by using the Protect O Plate under the label with a piece of carbon paper or wide cloth typewriter ribbon on top. Remember the old manual credit card machines in use BC (Before Computgers)? If you can find the font of the PoP you will have the font you need. Your guess about a typewriter is not correct.

          Terry,
You're saying that the date code was also put on the same way the Vin number was put on the blue label?
I have the car's Protect-O-Plate, but I still don't know what the font is known as. I was going to put the ID number on by using some black ribbon and a small wooden baking roller.

I am sure the date code was applied by a different method as it is not part of the PoP. If you have the PoP you don't need to know the font except for the date code. THe rest of the information on the blue label is direct from the Pop. Look on Evil-Bay for one of those old manual credit card machines and run a few tests on paper blanks and then do the blue label.

Bryan - I used my POP to apply both the VIN and date code. First, I covered all but the VIN with freezer tape, applied ink, and then removed the tape (so that only the VIN and partial lower codes had ink on it), and then pressed the plate on a great repo so that the VIN appeared (with a slight indication of codes below) on the bottom of the label. Then, I did the same so that I could apply the date code. It's a bit tought to keep all of this level but it worked well for me and got minimal deducts (if any) in judging. Have done the same as Pat stated using the POP. But for the date you can go to OfficeMax, OfficeDepot, etc. and have them make a rubber stamp just go through their catalog for the correct font and height and you in business. Plus you will have the stamp in a few minutes my store made them on site.

Chances are the IBM Selectric was used as it was an industry standard for various type applications. One could swap out the type font heads. There were many options for fonts as well as standard type "Pitch" -fonts per inch: 12 point pica (Most commonly used) and 10 point Elite. The list below is fonts IBM made available from 1964 - into the 1980's. You can take the fonts in the list and enter the names and search images to see examples which might narrow it down for you. Selectric heads are still on E-bay all the time for a couple bucks if you get a match.
