C1 Dual Point Distributor Oil Tube

The oil tube for my dual point distributor has material clogged in the middle bend. Just can't clear it with picking at it or typical solvents. I have been told the the distributor will be sufficiently lubricated in the shaft area by engine oil so one does not have to be concerned about lubrication coming from this tube. Anyone have knowledge in this area? Thanks. Richard

    Richard -

If that's an 891 distributor, the oil tube has a "wick" inside that shouldn't be removed; otherwise the oil you put in the GITS cap will run right out the bottom, down the mainshaft. The "wick" keeps oil against the upper mainshaft bushing.

      John,

how far down is this "wick" I have the same distributor and I opened the little cap and I don't see it. Can you buy a replacement?

Richard, I had one that "carbonized" in a single point distributor, you should be able to unscrew the tube and install a new wick. The material is about 3/16 diameter and about 3 inches long. I have some 1/8 inch that fits pretty well if you are interested. I to heard that it was not needed as the lubrication from the engine was sufficient, was hoping some would veryify this. I oil mine periodically anyway but I would imagine back in the day they were pretty much forgotten.

The end of the "wick" typically extends about 1-1/2" beyond the end of the oil tube into the distributor housing so it touches the upper bushing; only the lower bushing is directly exposed to engine oil.

The wick that I pictured(post 4) is 3 inches long, as John said about 1 1/2 inches go into the distributor and the other 1 1/2 inches are in the oil tube. These were available as a replacement part, a number that I can not locate right now, or you can buy wicking material. The wick that is in the picture, I am pretty sure is original material. THis is a single point distributor also, so that may be a little different.

John from your statement the upper bushing not exposed to engine oil, is this also true of the newer style distributor without oil tubes. I have tried to find out without much luck. I was told that, it was determined that the upper bushing did not require extra oiling.
            Thanks

I restored my dual point distributor. I got a new oil tube with wick inside. I got it from either Paragon or CC.

I would think a piece of a cigarette filter would serve as a good wick.

John, Does that mean the wick is a waste of time. Last time I looked cigarettes were expensive. If I recall I got several feet of wick material for about $2.

The wick in my tube is gone except for some material "petrified" in the bend in the middle and is difficult to remove. If the the tube is not necessary for lubrication then I don't have to experiment with ways to unclog the tube, find and replace the wicking material.

On the later no-oil-tube externally-adjustable distributors, the upper bushing doesn't see any engine oil either; it's lubricated by grease packed into the well in the casting around the upper bushing below the round plastic seal under the breaker plate. Cleaning out the dried-up caked old crud in that well and replacing it with grease is an important part of rebuilding a distributor, as that's the only lubrication the bushing will ever get.
