    Glove Box Door

The last time I had my '65 Sting Ray Flight-judged, I was told by an Interior Team judge that a previous owner had changed the door face and used the standard method to do this: he used small Phillips-head screws. He continued by telling me that since there is no way to rivet another door face as was done originally, this is the easiest/cheapest way. He told me to just drill out the Phillips-head centers and they should pass for original rivets.

What is the best way to do this? Drill press? Special technique?

Clark, the best way is to try to find a original glove box door. Once you have the original door and see what the original rivets look like you can take it from there. A drill press is not necessary, but you can probably get a nicer job.

      Clark,

The first photo below is the back of a 65 door showing the rivets.

The second is a 67 door, very similar rivets.
If you look at the rivet on the right corner in the photo, it has an anomoly double stamp of the rivet like the factory guy missed it on the first try.

The interior judge was going to ding me for this as he thought the double stamp was a replacement issue. But after telling them to take a second look, I think they realized it was a double stamp from the factory and the "rivet", or really a peened over stud from body of the front face of the door, was original.

The third photo is a closeup of the double stamped "rivet".

I thought that the replacement insert kits came with allen wrench screws rather than phillips. I'm told that it is easier to replicate the original rivets with the allen wrench screws. I'm sure there are some guys here who have done it, but not me.

Take a look at the third archived post down at the bottom.

      And have fun,
