    Washer Pump Color

A current thread on 1970 5 port washer pumps contains a discussion on wether washer pumps were originally white or yellow. Attached is a picture of a 1974 Corvette I once owned . VIN # 18168 was built in late February 1974 and we took delivery in early March 1974. The picture was taken Memorial Day 1974. To my eye the washer pump looks more white than yellow.

        Re: Washer Pump Color

I remember the thread, it was about a month ago. I have an NOS one and the color is a off white. It is my experience that they turn a yellowish color with age when exposed to the elements. However, the NOS unit that I have is an off white and it is still the same color as I had it for many years, but then again it is still in the box stored in my home. The yellowish seems to start around the edges or seems and spreads from there. Make no mistake, they are white, not snow white, just an off white color.

I looked at a 1970 Corvette after I got out of the service in Dec. 1969 & test drove one. I looked under the hood & ask the salesman what were the 5 hoses coming out of the windsheld washer were for & he said it was for the headlight washer. I never heard of such a thing but I will tell you that it was WHITE because I stared at it for a while trying to figure where all the hoses went off the 5 ports. Whoever thinks they were yellow when new have there heads up their OPPS I mean in the sand.

If I can find the picture of my 1970 engine compartment when the car was new -- I will post it, but I have started my 2012 Road Tour so I won't be able to do that for a while . I may however get some help with it.

W Washer pump when new is snow white. No yellow.

I rebuilt my 71 5-port last month and you can see in this picture that the part of the cylinder that has always been covered by the black plastic pump cover is markedly lighter than the exposed part.

Pic of the pump from my 71 LS5. This is the original pump to the car. Obviouslt one of the transition cars as it has a three port pump, but hoses and nozzels for the headlight washers.

I have an NOS 5 port outlet that is snow white.

I would think they started out this way and discolored over time due to the underhood heat and fumes.

Here is a sample of the color changes on my 1969 3 hose pump. The yellow check valve "T" is original. The pump was replaced about 10 years ago and shows signs of yellowing. The Headlamp diverter switch is new and is stark white.

I give both full credit during judging, I have an NOS unit for my 69 RS Camaro and it is the white, but not bright white, that Ron described. The original in my 69 Vette is yellowed with time. I give full credit to the white ones because that's what they looked like new and I give full credit to the yellowed ones so that folks won't be inclined to change them for points.

Oh -- that is great. Let's give everyone ALL the points and everybody will be happy. Then pass around the wacky tobacky for more joy.

                              An even better ides:
Wait until you get the judges (especially Team Leaders) in the bar for a couple of hours and then ask about the color of windshield washer pumps.
