First oil change to synthetic-non Corvette

I am tired of doing so many oil changes on my kid's cars (both 2006 & later) so switched to Mobil 1. Is there any reason to shorten the 1st change interval to 7500 miles then go to 10,000 on the next or can you safely go the the 10,000 right away?

I would it would depend on how the cars are driven. If the cars are driven a lot of highway miles you might go that long but if there is a lot of short stop & go trips I would not go that far between changes no matter what.

i was told by the mobil engineers that if you change the oil filter every 4000/5000 miles you can run the oil forever in modern FI cars. they have run cars 250,000 miles with no wear showing on the internal parts by just changing the filters and not the mobil 1. they said they can not recommend this because of the car makers warranties.

What interval does the OEM recommend? Both of our daily drivers have a 10,000 mile change interval using regular dino oil, assuming standard usage.

Why not have your kids accept responsibility for changing the oil in their own cars, whether they do it themselves or take it to a commercial establishment and pay for it out of their own pocket.

Beginning with my new SWC when I was 16 (that I paid for with my own money that I earned), I bought the oil/filters, changed it myself, and paid for my own gasoline.

It seems that many baby boomers' kids expect to be supported by their parents until their well into their thirties if not beyond.

What happened?

Why not have your kids accept responsibility for changing the oil in their own cars, whether they do it themselves or take it to a commercial establishment and pay for it out of their own pocket.

because it can not be done with a lap top. when #1 son got his license to drive i made him do the service work on MY cars as he was driving them at the time. i am teaching my grandson how to change brake pads.

A lot of the newer GM cars recommend that the oil be changed irrespective of mileage when the "oil life monitor" indicates it's time to do so (assuming that the monitor is re-set after each oil change). This is the policy that I follow with 3 of my cars.

Yes, and that makes sense. None of our cars have that feature and we have to put little stickies in the windshield to remind us of the date and mileage of when it's due. I just need another sticky somewhere else to remind me to read the sticky on the windshield.

Also, the modern "oil life monitor" systems are not simple, mileage and/or time related functions. They use complex algorithms to assess oil condition based on engine rpms, oil temperature, engine run time, and on-and-on. I have a lot of confidence in them.

+1, they are irreplaceable especially in a dry sump system.

I hope my 30-somethign daughter, Zoe, decides to go to Convention. If she does, perhaps you could find the time to have a fatherly talk with her -- so she knows that I am not the only mean ogre who wants her to take responsibility for her own life.

A buddy of mine recently asked me if I could do the same with his 17 year old son who is about to graduate from high school, but Dave and Mary (high achievers, high incomes, one child relatively late in life) have raised him like he was royalty.

I told Dave it was too late for me to do anything, especially if his son decides to go to USC instead of UCLA. (He has been accepted by both.) He's decided to live at home - why not - he has a "suite" in the house consisting of a bedroom, bathroom, study room, and guest room - everything but a wet bar!

If he chooses UCLA, Dave and Mary will actually get a financial break because the $8K a year tuition is cheaper than the $25K a year tuition at the private high school, which is about the same as a year's tuition at USC.
